The Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, in partnership with the Government Communication and Information System [GCIS] – Eastern Cape, hosted the Love Your Street Clean-Up Activation and Awareness Programme at Heroes Park this week.
The initiative brought together the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Chris Hani District Municipality, the Diocese of Mbhashe Mothers’ Union, the Community Work Programme [CWP] and members of the community in a shared commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
The programme commenced with a clean-up campaign in the Ngcobo CBD, followed by an awareness session and a tree-planting activity at Heroes Park.According to organisers, the Love Your Street initiative seeks to raise awareness of significant milestones in South Africa’s democratic history while encouraging active citizenship and collective responsibility in protecting and preserving public spaces.
Community members who took part said the campaign was an important step toward instilling pride in public spaces and ensuring towns remain clean and sustainable for future generations.
