The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM) Executive Mayor, Councillor Nomvuyo Mposelwa, recently handed over the site for the Lady Grey Water Supply New Trunk and Reticulation Water Mains Project. This significant milestone marks a major step towards improving access to clean and reliable water for the local community.

The R31.2 million project aims to upgrade and extend the bulk and reticulation water network in Lady Grey, with a focus on Khwezi-Naledi and Transwilger. According to the municipality, the project will address long-standing challenges such as low water pressure, uneven distribution, water losses, and unreliable supply.

The project includes the construction of new bulk and distribution pipelines, establishment of reticulation supply zones, installation of bulk and zone meters, leak detection and repairs, refurbishment of vandalised boreholes, and retrofitting of plumbing fittings in selected low-income households. These interventions form part of a comprehensive Water Conservation and Water Demand Management programme, which also aims to improve fire-flow capacity for safety and business protection.

The project is expected to create approximately 20 local job opportunities during its implementation period. The appointed contractor, Segabokeng Building Construction, commenced work in October 2025, with completion scheduled for June 2027.

The municipality has urged communities to protect the new infrastructure against vandalism, illegal connections, and water wastage. “Safeguarding water resources is a shared responsibility,” emphasized Cllr Mposelwa. The community is encouraged to work together with the municipality to ensure the success of the project.

The project is expected to bring relief to the residents of Lady Grey, who have been facing water supply challenges for a long time. With the project’s completion, residents can look forward to a reliable and clean water supply, which will improve their quality of life and support the local economy.
