The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM) has condemned in the strongest possible terms the discovery of the body of a young girl, believed to be a minor, found in the toilets at Telle Junction Junior Secondary School in Palmietfontein, Sterkspruit. The gruesome discovery was made on January 14, 2026, upon the reopening of schools.
The JGDM Executive Mayor, Councillor Nomvuyo Mposelwa, expressed profound sorrow and condemnation, describing the incident as a “heinous and inhumane act” that underscores the urgent need for decisive action against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the district.
Cllr Mposelwa called for swift justice and accountability, urging law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in investigating the matter and ensuring that the perpetrator or perpetrators are brought to book. “Justice must be served, and the full might of the law must be felt by those who commit such atrocities.
“We are deeply disturbed and heartbroken by this tragic discovery. The killing of women and children is an affront to our collective humanity and a stain on our society. This barbaric act underscores the urgent need for decisive action against gender-based violence and femicide.” she said.
The Executive Mayor also appealed to communities across the Joe Gqabi District to play an active role in combating GBVF, urging residents to remain vigilant, speak out, and report any suspicious activities or incidents of abuse. “The fight against gender-based violence cannot be left to government alone,” she emphasized.
The Joe Gqabi District Municipality extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and reaffirms its solidarity with all victims and survivors of gender-based violence. Residents who may have information that could assist investigations or who have lost a child or relative are encouraged to urgently contact the South African Police Service.
