The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape recently convened a special Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting on Monday, January 19, 2026, to discuss the complexities of the current year and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the province, country, and the ANC.

The PEC expressed profound sympathy with those affected by recent disasters in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal, highlighting systemic vulnerabilities. The committee welcomed the declaration of a national state of disaster and the rescue, humanitarian, and recovery interventions by all spheres of government in those provinces.

The PEC was devastated by the news of the Vaal road accident, which claimed 14 innocent young lives. The committee emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and a prompt state response.

The PEC welcomed the January 8 statement, particularly the guiding priorities on stabilizing local government and improving service delivery. The committee resolved to focus provincial January 8 activities at regional, sub-regional, and ground levels, ensuring impactful participation of structures and citizens.

The ANC Eastern Cape reaffirmed its commitment to unity and cohesion, urging members to speak with one voice and adhere to the ANC Constitution. Leaders were encouraged to serve a collective purpose, not individual gain. The committee emphasized that leadership must be visible, accessible, and accountable.

The meeting considered the roadmap for Sarah Baartman and Amathole regional and provincial conferences, including by-elections in three municipalities: Ward 32 in Rubusana, Ward 14 in Winnie Madikizela Mandela, and Ward 7 in Beyers Naude Municipality, all taking place before the end of March 2026.

The ANC will commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the South African Constitution, developing a year-long program to encourage ANC structures to drive agenda-setting.

The ANC PEC welcomed matric results above 80% in the province and encouraged structures to support the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) in the back-to-school campaign.

The ANC remains committed to anti-imperialism and solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine. The committee expressed unwavering support for the Venezuelan people, resisting USA imperialist interests and aggression.

The ANC Eastern Cape urged collective work, discipline, and wisdom to serve the people and build a better life for all. The committee emphasized the importance of working together to address the challenges facing the province and country.
