In a significant step towards youth empowerment and rural economic development, the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Honourable Oscar Mabuyane, delegated the Executive Mayor of Mbhashe Local Municipality, Dr Samkelo Janda, to officiate the handover of a 4-ton truck to Colosa Youth Primary Co-operative Limited. The handover took place earlier today in Colosa, Ward 09.

In a statement the municipality said the truck is valued  at R945,219.50, and will significantly enhance the co-operative’s operations by improving their capacity to transport produce to markets, supporting business growth and strengthening their contribution to local economic development.

Colosa Youth Primary Co-operative Limited is a registered vegetable farming initiative based in Colosa Location, Dutywa. Established in April 2021, the co-operative is a 100% rural-based, black-owned youth farming enterprise committed to the sustainable use of natural resources, transforming previously underutilised land into productive agricultural space.

Speaking during the handover , Executive Mayor Dr Samkelo Janda expressed appreciation to the provincial government for supporting youth-driven agricultural initiatives. He urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the asset and use it to grow their business, emphasising that government support aims to strengthen local economies and improve livelihoods.

He further encouraged the co-operative members to remain committed to farming, noting that agriculture plays a critical role in restoring dignity, promoting food security and creating sustainable opportunities in rural communities, highlighting the importance of collaboration.

The support was provided through the Isiqalo Youth Fund Programme, which forms part of government’s broader efforts to create sustainable opportunities for young entrepreneurs, particularly in rural areas where access to resources and support remains limited. Speaking on behalf of the project, co-operative member Sivuyisile Manganyelwa welcomed the initiative, noting that the group previously faced challenges transporting their produce to markets.

“With this truck, we will now be able to meet the demands of the markets that we supply. This handover reflects government’s continued commitment to empowering young people in rural communities. This support contributes to food security, sustainable job creation and the growth of youth entrepreneurship, benefiting not only the Colosa Youth Primary Co-operative, but also the youth of the Eastern Cape,” he said
