In just over a month, the annual Ntsimba Games return to Emawuleni Sports Grounds in Engcobo, set for 13–14 June 2026. This year’s games will once again bring the noise with both soccer and netball, and organisers say teams must move fast — there’s only space for 30 soccer teams and 20 netball teams.

In rural villages like Ntsimba, games around Youth Month are never just games. June is when schools are closed, young people are home, and the fields become the heartbeat of the community.

Ask anyone in Engcobo and they’ll tell you: these tournaments keep the youth busy, away from trouble, and dreaming bigger. It’s where a young striker from a dusty village field gets noticed. It’s where girls’ netball teams prove they’re just as fierce as the boys.

“Youth Month is about remembering 1976, but it’s also about building 2026,” said one local coach. “When our kids play, they learn discipline, teamwork, and pride. That’s nation-building on a Saturday afternoon.”

The Ntsimba Games have grown into one of Engcobo’s must-attend June events. With limited spots, organisers expect a scramble for registration. Teams from surrounding villages like Nkondlo, Mbanga and Mhlophekazi are already talking line-ups.

But it’s not all about trophies. These games contribute to social cohesion. They’re also a safe space. Emawuleni Grounds are where rural sport survives — patchy grass, no grandstands, but plenty heart.

In a province where rural youth unemployment is high and facilities are few, Youth Month games do heavy lifting: they create belonging. They turn “there’s nothing to do here” into “we’ve got a game on Saturday.” They remind young people that they’re seen.

So as the days tick down to 13 June, Ntsimba is already buzzing. Boots are being cleaned. Bibs are being washed. And a whole village is getting ready to shout for its children.

Teams interested in registering should contact the organisers as soon as possible due to limited space.
