{"id":904,"date":"2026-02-01T09:27:52","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T09:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecmessenger.co.za\/?p=904"},"modified":"2026-02-01T13:18:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T13:18:19","slug":"urgent-appeal-esatern-cape-police-seek-dog-donations-for-k9-units","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecmessenger.co.za\/index.php\/2026\/02\/01\/urgent-appeal-esatern-cape-police-seek-dog-donations-for-k9-units\/","title":{"rendered":"Urgent Appeal &#8211; Eastern Cape Police Seek Dog Donations for K9 Units"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">Umtata<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has extended its appeal to well-wishers to donate certain types of dog breeds to strengthen its fight against crime.\u00a0The urgent appeal to the public is meant to bolster its K9 units.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;A critical shortage of suitable dogs is currently impairing essential crime-fighting, search and rescue, and detection operations across the province,&#8221; said Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Adding that to be considered, dogs must be:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Healthy<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Confident<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Energetic<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Not fearful of people or loud noises<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He emphasised that the preferred breeds include German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Bloodhounds, Border Collies, Jack Russell, and Dutch Shepherds.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Selection Criteria includes:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Detection &amp; Search Roles: Dogs must demonstrate a high play\/prey drive.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8211; Patrol &amp; Apprehension Roles: Dogs must display a non-emotional, predatory sequence prey drive.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Contact Warrant Officer Chris Heggie (072 735 0116) if you&#8217;re interested in donating a dog.
