For several years, these stakeholders have lobbied for the rehabilitation of the R392, recognising its strategic importance as a key transport and economic route in the region.

The Municipality has further welcomed the formal transfer of the R392 maintenance function from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport into the national road network under SANRAL. This development is seen as a clear demonstration that coordinated advocacy and collaboration across all spheres of government can yield tangible outcomes for communities.

Stretching from the R58 intersection to Telle Bridge and passing through Herschel and Sterkspruit, the R392 serves as a vital lifeline for residents, businesses and service providers. Its deteriorating condition over the years has presented serious challenges related to road safety, accessibility and the movement of goods and services.

The imminent refurbishment works are therefore regarded as a critical turning point for the district. From a road safety perspective, the planned upgrades are expected to reduce accidents, improve driving conditions and enhance pedestrian safety. The improvements will benefit public transport operators, freight vehicles and private motorists, contributing to safer and more reliable travel for all road users.

In addition, the rehabilitation of the R392 is anticipated to strengthen connectivity between rural towns, service centres and economic hubs. Improved access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets and government services will particularly benefit communities that have historically been disadvantaged by poor road infrastructure.

JGDM Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, Councillor (Cllr) Unathi Hlathuka emphasised the economic opportunities associated with the project, noting that “infrastructure investment of this scale has the potential to stimulate local economic activity through job creation, skills development and procurement opportunities for Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), contractors and suppliers”. SANRAL has been encouraged to prioritise the inclusion of local enterprises, as well as women, youth, persons with disabilities and military veterans, during the implementation phase.

The municipality further acknowledged SANRAL’s previous investments in the district, including the completedrehabilitation of the R58, R56 and N6 routes, which have already improved mobility, reduced travel times and supported economic activity.

JGDM reaffirmed its commitment to working close with SANRAL, Senqu Local Municipality and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the R392 rehabilitation project and to maximise its longterm benefits.

The stakeholder engagement session has been described as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation and shared responsibility, aimed at ensuring that the project delivers sustainable development outcomes for the communities of the district.

Sterkspruit The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM) has welcomed the South African National Roads Agency

[8

post-954","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community
["GET
