On August 11th, the DR AB Xuma Local Municipality Library hosted a vibrant and inspiring celebration in honour of International Literacy Day at the Indoor Sport Centre. The event brought together book lovers, learners, educators and community members to promote literacy and foster a lifelong love for reading.
The celebration featured a dynamic range of activities, including reading and spelling bee competitions, book reviews and debate contests. Participants showcased their literary talents, engaging audiences and peers alike. The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of literacy in the digital age and nurture a culture of reading within the community.

“Literacy is the foundation upon which we build a brighter future for our children and our community,” said Hon. Mayor Cllr Siyabulela Zangqa. “As a Municipality, we are committed to promoting literacy and providing opportunities for our children to develop the skills they need to succeed. I commend the Community Services Department for hosting this important event and look forward to continued partnerships in advancing literacy, especially in the digital era.”
The event was made possible through strong partnerships with the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Chris Hani District Municipality and the Department of Education. Their support underscores the vital role of collaboration in promoting education and literacy across communities.
