In a significant step toward strengthening small businesses and fostering inclusive economic growth, Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality Honourable Mayor Councillor Siyabulela Zangqa recently handed over essential trading equipment to 65 local hawkers in Ngcobo operating across various sectors. These include fast food services, sewing enterprises, trolley conducting, and salon services, all of which play an important role in supporting everyday livelihoods within the community.

The initiative was implemented through the Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) Unit, Special Programmes Unit and the Ngcobo Hawkers Association. It reflects the Municipality’s continued efforts to support small-scale businesses and expand economic opportunities for local residents.

Through the provision of essential equipment, the programme is designed to help hawkers strengthen their daily operations, grow their customer base, and build more sustainable sources of income. Beneficiaries expressed optimism about the opportunities the support will unlock, particularly in enabling them to expand their services and attract more customers.

Addressing the recipients, Mayor Zangqa emphasised the importance of using the equipment responsibly and effectively. He encouraged beneficiaries to view the support not only as assistance, but as an investment in their future growth and sustainability.

The handover marks Phase One of the Municipality’s broader empowerment programme. Officials confirmed that plans are already in place to extend the initiative in the upcoming financial year, ensuring that hawkers who were not included in this phase will have an opportunity to benefit in the next round.
