The African National Congress in the O.R. Tambo Region has expressed shock and outrage following the fatal shooting of three young people in Qumbu, Mhlontlo Sub-Region.
Comrade Wonele Gontshi, a member of the Branch Executive Committee of General Maqutyana Branch (Ward 14) and Branch Elections Team Coordinator, was killed in the attack. Two others were injured, including Comrade Ngawonke Bulala, Elections Manager of the Mhlontlo Local Elections Team and a member of the leadership collective of General Maqutyana Branch.
“The untimely death of Comrade Wonele Gontshi has robbed the movement and the people of a committed activist who dedicated his energies towards organisational work, community mobilisation and the advancement of the objectives of the African National Congress,” said Cde Vinny Tsita, ANC O.R. Tambo Regional Secretary. “His passing represents a painful loss to the ANC family, his loved ones and the broader community he served with humility and dedication.”
The ANC condemned the attack as a violation of human dignity, peace and social cohesion. The party called on the South African Police Service to ensure those responsible are brought to justice without delay.
“We convey our best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Comrade Ngawonke Bulala and the other injured survivor,” Tsita added. “We appeal to all members of the community who may have information relating to this incident to cooperate with the authorities. The struggle against crime and violence requires the active participation of communities working together with law-enforcement agencies.”
The ANC extended condolences to the Gontshi family, relatives, friends and comrades affected by the tragedy.
